L'ATELIER D'ARTISTE and THE COTTAGE: TERMS AND CONDITIONS
We hate rules and regulations, but ...
... for your clarity as well as ours we need to have some simple terms and conditions that govern your booking and your stay with us. We've done our best to write them in plain English, though please forgive us if they sound a little formal and terse; that’s down to the subject matter and not to us, and actually we’re not at all like that in the flesh! They are important and form the basis of your contract with us, so we do ask you to read them carefully before booking; when you submit your booking form(s) you are signifying that you've read and that you accept everything written below.
Here they are:
BOOKINGS AND PAYMENTS
When you make an enquiry about particular dates we will on request hold those dates for a maximum of 48 hours in order to give you time to make practical arrangements, book flights, and so on. If we have not received a booking form from you within that time we reserve the right to take other bookings for those dates.
On receipt of your booking form, an email confirmation will be sent to you within 24 hours. In order to finalise your booking you must then pay us a deposit of within 7 days. Your deposit will be 40% of the total cost of your stay if you've booked more than 8 weeks before your arrival date; for later bookings the whole cost of your stay is payable in order to confirm your reservation.

2. Paying your balance
The balance of the cost of your holiday is due 8 weeks before your arrival at L'Atelier d'Artiste, using one of the payment methods specified above.
Payment of your balance must be made in euros. No other currency or method of payment can be accepted. Any charges incurred for bank transfer or Paypal payments must be met by you. If you use Paypal, a transaction charge and commission will be deducted from the amount we receive; we'll calculate the charges and add them to your invoice.
3. Security deposit
A refundable security deposit/good housekeeping bond of 200 euros or 200 pounds must be paid 4 weeks before your arrival (or earlier). This may be waived for previous guests. The deposit is to cover any additional costs incurred by us due to damage, loss, breakages (excluding minor breakages of crockery or glassware) or additional cleaning charges if the barn is left in an especially dirty condition; it will be returned to you in full no more than 7 days after your departure date if no deductions are needed. Any deductions we have to make will be backed up with photographic evidence and based on quantifiable costs.
Our UK guests may pay their security deposit in pounds, into a UK bank account. This ensures that you will pay no fees and that you can be refunded quickly and easily.
CANCELLATION AND CURTAILMENT
1.Cancellation or curtailment by you
Your deposit is non-refundable in the case of cancellation or curtailment. However, we'll do our best to re-let your accommodation; if we succeed, we may return a proportion or all of your deposit to you on a goodwill basis, less an administration charge of 35 euros to cover our time and costs.
If you cancel or curtail your booking less than 8 weeks before your arrival date, we can only refund your balance payment if we can re-let your booked dates and once again, any refund will be made after deduction of any actual costs or losses we may incur.
If you cancel part of your booking or cut short your stay after your arrival, you will remain liable for the full payment as if you had stayed with us for the full term of your original booking.
Cancellations must be confirmed to us in writing, by email or conventional mail, and will be acknowledged in writing by us.
2. Cancellation or curtailment by us
In the very unlikely event that we have to cancel your stay with us (for example, severe illness or other emergency situation, damage to the house by fire, storm etc, or any other circumstances) we will of course refund your entire deposit. Our liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid us and we can't be held liable for losses you may incur in respect of plane and/or other travel or alternative accommodation, although we will do our best to help you find alternative accommodation.
We very strongly recommend that you take out adequate travel insurance to cover yourself against cancellation or curtailment and other possible losses such as loss of valuables. We cannot be held liable for loss however caused.
SMOKING AND FIRE RISK
The entire house is a strict non-smoking zone; this extends to electronic cigarettes. Guests who do not respect this rule will be asked to leave immediately with no refund given. We also reserve the right to make a ‘recovery charge’ of 150 euros if there is evidence of smoking anywhere indoors.
Because of our situation in the middle of woodland and the consequent increased risk of fire from cigarettes and matches, the terraces, gardens, grounds and woodlands are also non smoking zones. The use of charcoal barbecues is permitted, but they must stay attended until completely extinguished. It is no longer permitted in France to light any form of open fire outside.
ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES
You may check in from 4.30pm on your arrival day, and depart at any time up to 10.30am on your departure day.
Vehicle access to Maison Grillou is via one kilometre of unpaved but gravelled forest track. The track is maintained by the commune and is bumpy and rutted in places but perfectly drivable by the vast majority of cars, except possibly low-slung saloons, sports cars or other vehicles with minimal ground clearance (less than 120mm, which is the basic minimum for most unmodified EU cars). Our guests drive this track in ordinary cars every year without incident, as do we, and all basic hire cars will cope well enough. We can't be held liable for any problems, loss or damage that may be incurred. If you are concerned about access please discuss this with us before booking.
One dog may be accepted, by prior agreement and under certain conditions. Dogs are at no time permitted on furniture or beds, even if throws are used, and may not be left alone in your accommodation while you are out unless caged or crated. They must be in good health and have up to date vaccinations.
Please note that no parts of our grounds are fenced - they run off into woodland in every direction. There are fields of cattle, sheep and other livestock nearby; you are legally responsible for keeping your dog under your control at all times. You are also responsible for clearing up any dog mess in the grounds.
We make no formal charge for your dog to stay, but we ask for a donation of a minimum of 40 euros, which we will pass on to one of the dog rescue associations that we support each year. You'll need to make sure that on your departure you leave no trace of your dog's presence behind you, and you'll be wholly (and financially) responsible for any damage done by your dog in the house or grounds during your stay.
WI FI CONDITIONS
Because of regulations relating to shared internet connections in France and because Maison Grillou's internet connection is slow (average 2-5 Mbps) and very rural, served by 4km of old overhead cable, we have to impose particular conditions on your Wifi use during your stay in order to keep the service operational:
L'AtelierAll guests must be at least 18 years of age.
Accommodation at Maison Grillou is available by reservation only. L'Atelier d'Artiste may be occupied by a maximum of two persons. Our sofas are not sofa beds and may not be slept on under any circumstances.
The minimum period of reservation is seven nights.
L'Atelier d'Artiste is for booked guests only. Only persons whose names are specified on the booking form may stay in or use the accommodation. If you wish to entertain friends during your stay you must clear this with us first; overnight stays are not permitted.
Our parking area can accommodate a maximum of one guest car. It's not possible to bring vans (except car-sized vans) or camper vans onto our grounds; the nearest parking for such vehicles or for extra cars is the public car park in the village, 3 kilometres away.
We'll do our best to ensure that all advertised services are available during your stay, but occasionally life has other ideas and things go awry, through nobody's fault. "C'est la vie", as we say here: we'll move heaven and earth and do everything we can to rectify things, but can't be held liable for any interruption or breakdown in services due to ‘force majeure’ or other circumstances outside our control.
L'Atelier d'Artiste is a self-catering holiday rental, and you must look after your accommodation during your stay. This means that you must keep all furniture, fittings and effects (inside and outside the property) in the same state of repair as at the start of your stay. You must leave your accommodation in the same state of general order in which you found it on your arrival; that doesn't mean you need to do a spring clean, but it does mean that it needs to be basically clean and tidy - with surfaces, kitchen and bathroom cleaned and bins emptied - so that we can prepare it to the same high standard for the next guests within the limited time available. We provide you with the tools and cleaning materials to make that possible. This applies to all guests and we don't offer a paying cleaning service.
Any breakage, spillage, staining or other damage must be notified to us straight away and not left until your departure day.
The booking contract between us, and any dispute arising out of it, is wholly governed by French consumer and contract law.
