The house lends itself particularly to home working in different forms. Fibre internet is newly available (we have not yet arranged connection to the house - currently running an ADSL connection of around 6Mbps - although all the external cabling is in place) and 4G mobile internet is also available. There is plenty of room for two people to have separate office spaces.
The Ariège is very welcoming and encouraging of those wanting to settle here and there are various resources available to support new enterprises.
Association Espace focuses specifically on the Séronais area and offers personalised support to those wanting to settle here as entrepreneurs, however small. It has been in existence for a number of years and has helped a large number of people to install themselves here.
CCI Ariège runs online seminars for those wanting to set up a business here.
The current owners have run a successful chambre d'hôtes and gîte business for 11 years, which has provided a substantial complementary income.
The gîte has been let from the end of April/May to the middle of October every year. We have always marketed specifically to couples with a special interest in walking and nature, and have been fully booked every year with a waiting list for popular weeks (especially June and September). We have never used AirBnB or Booking - just a handful of small advertising sites and our own website - so marketing overheads have been low. As well as from France, we have had clients from all over Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States and many have returned a number of times. In our last year our weekly rate was 650€ throughout the season; potential income is therefore 13000€ over a 20 week season.
For 6 years we operated as chambres d'hôtes for four people, using both the gîte and the salon/bedroom/shower room adjacent, each let to one couple or let jointly to two couples or a couple with two older children. The main house dining room was used for breakfast and for thrice-weekly table d'hôtes dinners. Potential additional gross income is around 600€ per week or 12000€ over a 20 week season.
