                            real, good, slow food

Having run a small restaurant before we moved here and been early members of the Slow Food movement, food is a pretty big thing for us. Put simply, we love real, good, slow food: what we’ll cook for you are the kind of things we love to eat ourselves.

                            an ariège breakfast

We’ll serve you a copious breakfast between around 8.00 and 10.00, in the dining room, our farmhouse kitchen, the covered dining area or on one of the terraces depending on the weather. You can enjoy fresh juice, cereals, different breads (home made, or fresh from our village boulangerie), pain d'épices, viennoiserie (croissants, pain au chocolat or pain aux raisins), home made yoghurt, fromage blanc, fresh fruits or compôtes, our own home made jams and jellies, local honey, tea, coffee or chocolate, plus maybe a sweet or savoury ‘cake’, eggs, or local cheese … every day something different.

                            dinner

Dinner is available three evenings a week: days vary to ensure that everyone who stays with us has the opportunity to eat with us at least once if they so choose.

Our cooking influences are varied: we bring to Maison Grillou the distinctive style that characterised and made a success of our former restaurant, joining a contemporary twist on some of the traditional dishes of southern France together with the inspiration of the cooking of southern Italy, Spain and the Middle East, all of which work beautifully with our local ingredients. What we enjoy most is food with big flavours, vibrant colours and a strong identity.

Good food needs good ingredients: for us that means local, seasonal and sustainable. What we can, we grow; what we can’t we buy from others who can. Here in Ariège we’re blessed with a huge number of small producers, as well as great markets at which to buy their produce.

                            la table d'hôtes

La table d’hôtes is a unique aspect of French chambre d’hôtes hospitality. It's not a restaurant: you won't be offered a choice of menus (though we will take into account your allergies and dislikes, of course). In a nutshell, you’ll join us for dinner, at our own table, as if you're at an informal supper party with friends. We’ll enjoy four courses of seasonal, locally produced food, accompanied by wine, preceded by an apéro and followed by coffee.

Menus change every evening: rarely repeated, they simply reflect what’s in season, what the weather’s like, and what we’re in the mood for cooking! We create each day's menu as a whole, not as four separate courses; that way each course can complement the others and you can taste a number of different ingredients with various flavours and textures. We don’t do the ‘small starter, big main course’ thing: each course is similar in size and weight, designed to allow everyone to get to the end of the evening without feeling either bloated or unsatisfied.

We make pretty much everything here from scratch, from aïoli to ice cream. Our speciality is cooking with vegetables; although we generally (unless you're vegetarian - see below) do include some local meat or fish in our menus, we never let them dominate.

                            vegetarian and other stories

It’s not always easy being vegetarian in France; in fact it’s often barely understood. We thoroughly enjoy cooking and eating without meat or fish, we understand the nuts and bolts of doing so, and will be delighted to produce an inventive and delicious vegetarian dinner menu if you're vegetarian or if you’d simply like to experience our distinctive vegetable cooking.

We can accommodate most simple food allergies, though not (due to a lack of locally available ingredients) strictly gluten free or coeliac diets. Our cooking, while not heavy in either dairy or eggs, does nevertheless include both and we don’t generally offer a purely vegan alternative.

                            booking dinner

We serve dinner at 7.30 for 8pm. If you'd like to eat with us on your first or second night here we ask that you let us know when you make your booking with us. Otherwise we like to have 36 hours notice (in other words at breakfast time for the following evening): we don't keep big stocks of food here, and this being deep rural France it takes some time to gather ingredients from our various sources.

Dinner is 28 euros for 4 courses, plus aperitif and coffee.

                            slow food and wine breaks

In the quieter season between November and March we offer special Slow Food and Wine Breaks: representing exceptional value for money, these offer two or three nights accommodation in La P'tite Maison, including breakfast and a four course dinner each evening. Dinner will feature some of the rich cool-season cooking of the region, and will include a local apéritif, and a bottle of Côteaux d'Engraviès, Philippe Babin's much acclaimed local organic wine, on one night, with another Ariège wine on the second. Slow Food and Wine Breaks can begin on any day of the week, with check in from 14.00 on your arrival day and check out up to 14.00 on departure day.

Price for 2 nights: 250 euros per couple.
Price for 3 nights: 375 euros per couple.
